About
An ancient Roman road connecting the empire that dates back 2300 years.
Starting from the centre of Rome, Via Appia - more commonly known as the Appian Way - is a sight to behold. Not only does it look like another ancient ruin, but it's actually one of the longest and oldest Roman roads ever built. Constructed in 312 B.C.E., this 560 kilometer stretch of road was commissioned by the powerful Appius Claudius Caecus and designated for military transportations and supplies, but its use expanded rapidly shortly after completion. A true marvel of the Roman Empire, walking along the Appian Way gives a great insight into Rome's storied history.
