About
These medieval skyscrapers dominate the skyline of this small Tuscan town.
In the age of the Renaissance, Tuscany was the center of the Western World. Its towns and cities grew insanely wealthy from a dense network of trade routes that spanned the Mediterranean and continental Europe. Throughout Tuscany, small town residents exploited this wealth to build towers as a status symbol. The law only allowed for one tower per town, so many families built taller and taller towers in an attempt to outdo each other. At its peak, San Gimignano boasted 72 towers!
