About
Located in the heart of the lower city, just a few steps away from the propylaea of Porta Nuova, stands a monument honoring the sacrifices made during the Great War.
Within its walls lies an intriguing journey through the history of Piacenza and its transformation into a modern city. Atop the tower, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Bergamo unlike any other. Over time, this tower has become an iconic symbol of Marcello Piacentini's design for the city center. In the late 1800s, as the administrative and commercial hub moved from the upper to lower city, major changes began to take place in this area where the tower now stands. In 1907, an architectural competition was held to revitalize this area and it was won by Marcello Piacentini and Giuseppe Quaroni's functional yet respectful design that aligned with the vision of the upper city. However, due to World War I, construction was put on hold and only resumed after its end with one significant alteration - this structure was transformed from a decorative building to a public memorial honoring Bergamo's fallen soldiers in the war.
