The Protestant Cemetery of Rome, also called Cimitero acattolico (Non-Catholic Cemetery) or Cimitero degli inglesi (Cemetery of Englishmen) and informally called Cimitero degli stranieri (Cemetery of Foreigners), is nestled behind the pyramid of Caius Cestius in the Roman rione (district) Testaccio. This burial ground has a long history of being a destination for sightseers from all around the world, especially those interested in Roman historical landmarks. Artists, scholars, and countless other famous and unknown people have been laid to rest here. Some notable examples include Romantic poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley as well as Communist leader Antonio Gramsci, writer Carlo Emilio Gadda, and physicist Bruno Pontecorvo. The ancient section of the cemetery appears like a park while the modern area contains thousands of graves.
