About
Out of a flat ceiling, a trompe-l'oeil master creates a stunning, tourist-fooling dome.
When the funds ran out in 1642, the Jesuit church of Saint Ignazio was supposed to have a glorious dome. Andrea Pozzo proposed painting a life-sized dome that would fool visitors' eyes (as long as they viewed it from the right angle) rather than forgoing the dome altogether. In 1685 and 1694, he painted a masterpiece that still deceives the eye.
