About

It is said that this strange bovine gargoyle was placed as a passive aggressive revenge act.

Santa Maria del Fiore houses many intricate details, including the stone bull’s head resting on one of the left-side capitals. It is situated above the “Porta delle mandorle,” which gives access to the dome. Uncertain as to why it was placed there, two theories exist. Some claim it was a tribute to the draft animals utilized in its construction, while others attribute a more amusing and spiteful motive: an argument between two architects who were working on the edifice.
