About
Rome's oldest marble building is this curious, round temple.
The Temple of Hercules Victor is an iconic structure located near the Tiber River in Forum Boarium. This round Greek-style temple, also known as a tholos, is encircled by a colonnade and constructed from marble making it the only one of its kind surviving in Rome. Its construction dates back to 120 BC, making it the oldest marble building and second oldest overall in all of Rome. According to legend, it was dedicated to Hercules (nickname Victor). However, this edifice is sometimes referred to as the Temple of Hercules Olivarius, a deity responsible for protecting oil.
