About
Amidst piles of skulls, you are left alone to contemplate mortality in the crypt of St. Mary of Eulogies and the Dead.
The facade of Santa Maria dell’Orazione e Morte is a sight truly befitting its dark name. Carved skulls peak out from above the entrance and winged skeletons are etched onto plaques on the outside. For a small donation to the church, visitors will receive access to the crypt, unlocked by a nun who will then lead them down a short staircase and leave them alone with the bones. Skeletons line the walls, skulls are stacked on shelves and bones are crafted into crosses near the altar. Even more eerie is how human vertebrae have been used for chandelier decorations, with a scythe lurking nearby.
