About
Porta San Giacomo, also known as the San Giacomo Gate, served as the entrance to Bergamo for travelers coming from Milan.
It is the sole point of entry to the Walls that can be easily admired from Viale Vittorio Emanuele. The gate's strategic position and striking white marble construction make it a standout feature against the grey defensive walls. This particular material was sourced from Zandobbio's quarries in the nearby Cavallina Valley. Its remarkable appearance has made it a popular spot for photography and serves as a perfect backdrop for special events such as national celebrations, where colored lights can be projected onto its surface. Step onto the balustrade and take in the breathtaking views of the Venetian fortifications on one side and a panoramic vista of Lower Town and the Plain up to the Apennines on the other. The gate itself boasts a triangular pediment supported by classical semi-columns, like many other gates throughout the city. A symbol of Venice's reign over Bergamo, the carved Lion of Saint Mark stands proudly atop Porta San Giacomo.
