About

Migrants cross the dangerous waters between North Africa and a tiny Italian island to reach this monument.

As a memorial to those who have died crossing the Mediterranean Sea on the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, a solitary gateway stands near the airport, near the ruins of bunkers and military installations. Mimmo Paladino designed the monument in 2008, aptly named "Gateway to Europe" ("Porta d'Europa") as part of a project sponsored by Amani. In memory of those migrants who died while crossing the treacherous Mediterranean from North Africa to Europe, it stands as a memorial.
