About
Nuns who were still alive prayed close to the dead bodies as they were left to rot on stone seats.
Being located on a tidal volcanic islet accessible to the main island of Ischia only by a causeway, the Aragonese Castle of Ischia is already exceptional in and of itself. However, one of the many rooms inside the castle has a unique past that would make for a good horror film. Although the present-day fortress was erected starting in 1441 by King Alfonso V of Aragon, who also built the bridge connecting the little island to Ischia, the islet's origins date back to the 5th century BC. Because it was the only location safe from pirates between the 16th and 18th centuries, nearly 2,000 families called this fortress home. Over the years, the castle has had numerous owners and served a variety of purposes.
