About
In 1923, a manufacturing director created the longest suspension footbridge in the world so that his workers could arrive at work in safety.
The Ponte Sospeso, one of the longest suspension footbridges in the world even today, was constructed in Italy in 1923 to make it easier for workers at a nearby pin factory to commute to work. The Società Metallurgica Italiana produced metal goods in a number of production facilities around Italy at the turn of the 20th century. One of these was a pin and nail factory in the remote Tuscan village of Mammiano Basso. On the other side of the Lima River valley, in the neighboring community of Popiglio, were many workers at this factory.
