About
The greatest school of Greek philosophy was located in this ancient city.
In the 6th century BCE, Greeks from Phocaea founded the ancient Roman city Velia on the Cilento coast of Southern Italy as Hyele, which later became Elea. As a flourishing town and one of the most important cultural centers of the Greek world, Elea was home to Parmenides, who founded the Eleatic school of philosophy there in the early 5th century BCE.
