About

It still contains the embalmed hearts and organs of 22 popes from the former Roman Catholic Church.

A marble urn containing 22 popes' hearts remains in the marble urns of Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio a Trevi in Rome, which was gifted by Pope John Paul II in 2002 to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in Rome. On the left of the altar are the popes whose reigns range from Sixtus V in 1583 to Leo XIII in 1903. Praecordia was a custom of separating the organs from the corpse while funeral arrangements were being made to prevent decay.
