About
"The prettiest love letters in the world" ... so said Lord Byron.
“Often I find myself recalling, and with what ease, certain words spoken to me, some on the balcony with the moon as witness, others at that window I shall always look upon so gladly, with all the many endearing and gracious acts I have seen my gentle lady perform…” -Pietro Bembo to Lucrezia Borgia 1503 Lord Byron noticed a strand of golden hair while visiting Milan's renowned Biblioteca Ambrosiana in 1816. The object, which has been a part of the library's collections since its inception, was reportedly a present from a young woman to her lover and was silently and safely stored at the library alongside their handwritten letters for more than 400 years. Finally, in 1928, a suitable reliquary to house Lucrezia Borgia's hair was commissioned from a local jeweler.
