Must See Places

About

Nestled between the striking Three Peaks Nature Park and the picturesque Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park lies Lake Dobbiaco in the Upper Val Pusteria.

This mountain lake was formed from ancient rockfalls and, in 1939, five bunkers were erected around its perimeter at the command of Mussolini to safeguard Italy's access roads. These structures are remnants of the Alpine Wall, a defensive line constructed during WWII. Today, visitors can enjoy a leisurely two-hour walk on the Lake Dobbiaco Nature Trail which spans 4.5 km along its shore. Along the trail, informative panels provide insight into the diverse flora and fauna found here. The lake is situated within close proximity to both nature parks and puts practical skills to test as one must out-jump and outpace the forest inhabitants. Bird enthusiasts flock to Lake Dobbiaco (Toblacher See) during spring and autumn as it attracts rare migrant species. During summer, row boat rentals are available for those looking to explore the tranquil waters while in July, it serves as a highlight along the renowned Südtirol Dolomiti Superbike race route through the stunning Dolomites.
