About

A gift received for creating the masterpiece is the famous painter's vineyard, just across from the "Last Supper" painting.

Around 1482, Leonardo da Vinci relocated to Milan where he worked on various assignments for Duke Ludovico Sforza, who was regarded as the leader of Milan. In acknowledgement of his efforts, the duke commissioned him to create the “Last Supper” at the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie in 1495. As a gesture of appreciation, Sforza granted Leonardo a small vineyard with dimensions of 60 x 175 meters in 1498. The plot was spacious enough to accommodate 16 rows of plants. Da Vinci treasured this gift and was immensely proud because his family had been winemakers for generations; after laboring on the fresco each day, he retired to the garden in the evenings. It also gave him eligibility for Milanese citizenship since it was situated just a few blocks from his house.
