About
Surrealist architecture has been added to this 16th-century monastery.
When it was a Franciscan monastery, La Scarzuola had little in common with the extraordinary vision of Milanese architect Tomaso Buzzi. After acquiring the property in 1956, Buzzi merged the traditional “sacred city” with his own bewitching “ideal city”, a parable of the journey to reach authentic living. His creative approach blends real life with fantastical elements, incorporating Classical to Medieval and Renaissance structures with Neomannerist hallmarks like disoriented stairways, haphazard proportions and bizarre shapes.
