About
This stunning alpine setting is home to one of the worst dam failures of the 20th century.
As Italy entered the 20th century, desires for increased energy sources led to the attempt of harnessing hydroelectric power as a symbol of progress. Unfortunately, the undertaking in Bergamo province's Scalve valley resulted in tragedy due to the usage of inadequate materials and poor workmanship. The project, originally intended to be a gravity dam, underwent changes when monetary issues caused it to transition into a multiple-arch dam mid-construction, thus creating a mixed-type dam.
