Slowly eroding sides of the plateau are causing this quaint Italian town to lose ground.
The historic town of Civita di Bagnoregio has occupied its lofty perch for centuries, despite the ever-present threat of erosion. Years ago, the Etruscans built it atop a volcanic tower, with one entrance through a stone arch. Its architecture filling a small circular area, flush with the edge of the plateau. The soft clay beneath it has led to much wear and tear over time, making it vulnerable to natural disasters that further damaged the base - and hence putting its structure at risk of collapsing off the side.
