About
In spite of the area's ongoing flooding, the ruins of this once-beautiful medieval church remain.
The church of Santa Maria di Cartignano was excavated and restored around 1968 and is an amazing example of a romanesque church from the 11th century. Gothic elements were added around the mid-13th century after an earthquake damaged it. The church became a monastic site at the end of the 11th century, which lasted until the second half of the 14th century when it was governed by Montecassino.
