About
Since 1833, 18 mummies have kept watch behind the altar of this little church.
The Church of the Dead, also known as Chiesa dei Morti, is a small church that serves as Urbania's main draw. Urbania is a bustling medieval town in central Italy. Visitors are immediately taken into the chapel, also known as the mummy graveyard, after passing through the church's Baroque doorway. This morbid exhibit has drawn visitors here for years. Since 1833, there have been 18 mummies at the cemetery that are displayed individually in glass cases behind the altar. These people, naturally mummified by the presence of a particular mold that drained all the moisture from the bodies, are well-known both within and outside the community.
