About
A museum transformed from a power plant clashes with gods.
The Centrale Montemartini in Rome stands at an intersection of industry and divinity. This former public electricity plant, located on the Tiber River, began to power much of the city in 1912 and continued until 1963. After its closure, the Giovanni Montemartini Thermoelectric Centre was transformed into a museum. In 1997, ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were temporarily displayed among the industrial machines, yet this exhibition was so successful that it has been kept permanently at this unique site. This union of gods and machines continues to provide a striking visual contrast within the old electrical production area.
