About

The founding of the town of Monastero dates back to 1050.

Aleramo, the Marquis of Monferrato, sent a party of Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Fruttuaria to San Benigno Canavese in order to cultivate and grow crops on the areas that the Saracens had destroyed. Dating back to this same monastic presence, the original Romanesque bell tower from the abbey church is still intact. Later, it was converted to a belfry and connected to the castle via a bridge. The monastery's remodeling led to the creation of the castle. It is a quadrangular building with enormous lateral towers. Although the interior, "especially the piano nobile," boasts priceless mosaic flooring and beautiful frescoes, the façade is laid out in a medieval manner.
