About

In an epic display of octagonal masonry, geometry and mystery combine.

A living testimony to the brilliant and curious mind of its founder, the Emperor Frederik II, is the Castel del Monte, literally “Castle of the Mount.” Known for his love of justice and peace, he built the building in 1240, only to abandon it a few years later due to his pride and ambition. Later on, the citadel served as a prison, as well as a refuge for political refugees, herdsmen, and thugs.
