About
Once home to Jesus Christ's secret foreskin, this medieval town has been transformed into a hippie commune.
Visiting the ancient town of Calcata, located around an hour outside of Rome, presents a unique experience in more than one way. The combination of its captivating scenery and quirky inhabitants make it an unforgettable spot. It is also known for its remarkable holy relic. In the 1930s, because of issues concerning the stability of the nearby bluffs and potential earthquakes, the Italian government had to relocate all the citizens to nearby Calcata Nouvo, which is half a mile away. By the 1960s, a new set of individuals – typically artists – began coming into the region. Currently, the hamlet appears chaotic with galleries, studios and workshops peppered through and beneath old structures. There are even some places built in caves hollowed in adjacent mountainside.
