About

The Church of San Giacomo Maggiore is situated in the charming piazza Rossini in Bologna.

his historic church was constructed between 1267 and 1315 by the Eremite friars of Sant'Agostino and underwent renovations in the late 15th century. Its exterior exhibits Romanesque architecture, while its interior showcases a blend of Gothic and late Renaissance styles. The single large and luminous nave houses renowned artistic treasures, such as the Bentivoglio Chapel and Poggi Chapel. The former, built in the 15th century, remains one of the most significant examples of early Bolognese Renaissance art. In contrast, the latter was commissioned for Cardinal Giovanni Poggi during the following century and was designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi. Adjacent to the church stands a magnificent Renaissance portico that leads to the adjacent Santa Cecilia church. This church boasts exceptional frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Cecilia and Saint Valerian, painted by esteemed artists of the Bolognese school in 1504-06. On one side of this complex rises a bell tower, erected in 1471 with a height of approximately 55 meters.
