About
Situated along Strada Maggiore, the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi is a magnificent display of Gothic architecture.
Constructed through the efforts of father Andrea Manfredi da Faenza and master Antonio di Vincenzo, who had previously collaborated on the Basilica of San Petronio, it features a spacious four-sided portico. This portico was begun in 1393 and completed sometime between the 16th and 19th centuries, as can be seen in Pier Paolo Pasolini's renowned film Oedipus Rex (Edipo Re). Within the basilica's interior lies Cimabue's stunning Enthroned Madonna (Madonna in trono), as well as works by other esteemed artists such as Crespi, Albani, and Calvaert. Adding to its splendor is a 52-meter bell tower characterized by graceful columns and innovative design, echoing that of the portico before the church.
