About
The Basilica of San Petronio, a minor basilica and church within the Archdiocese of Bologna, can be found in Bologna, Emilia Romagna, northern Italy.
It proudly overlooks Piazza Maggiore and is dedicated to its patron saint, Saint Petronius. This revered figure served as the bishop of Bologna during the fifth century. The building's construction began in 1390 and its main facade remains unfinished. In 1929, the city transferred ownership to the diocese and finally consecrated the basilica in 1954. However, it wasn't until 2000 that it became home to Bologna's patron saint relics; previously they were housed in Santo Stefano church.
