About
Ruins of the thermal baths that once attracted royals and aristocrats.
The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 set off a global conflict unlike anything that had previously been experienced. In the depths of the Sesto Dolomites natural park in the Italian Alps, the effects of World War I were still being felt. The Grand Hotel Wildbad, which was constructed around the park's renowned San Candido thermal spas, started to decline as the number of visitors decreased during the war. The five thermal springs, or Bagni, were first documented in writing in 1586, but coins and Roman and Illyrian ruins have been discovered nearby, suggesting that the springs' curative properties were well recognized as early as the first century.
