About

The spinning top village of southern Italy.

In 1644, Naples and Spain had great influence over Italy. Apprehensive of such power, Count Acquaviva of Alberobello, located in the Puglia region, sought a way to protect his people from having to pay taxes for settlement. The solution he devised involved using trullo houses - which had been around for centuries - due to their drystone walls being able to be built or dismantled rapidly. These roofless dwellings consisted of a domed shape topped with a pointed conical roof.
