About
The ruins of a town so completely destroyed by French forces that its citizens simply left.
Tucked away atop a picturesque tuff hill near Rome and Bracciano's lake, Monterano is an abandoned village enveloped by the protective arms of the lush Monterano Nature Park. Despite its ghostly state, this once-thriving settlement has maintained its popularity due to its proximity to the Italian capital and beloved Cinecittà. Dating back all the way to the Bronze Age, Manturanum (as it was known in Roman times) regained much of its majesty during the Middle Ages. Today, a section of the old Roman aqueduct stands as forlorn reminder of those days gone by.
