About
Located on Saint Peter's crucifixion site, this architecturally significant temple is more sculpture than building.
Nestled upon the eastern slope of Gianicolo hill, thought to be the site of St. Peter’s crucifixion, lies the beautiful and historically abundant San Pietro in Montorio church. Built in 15th century, this church boasts a multitude of renaissance artworks from Italian masters and a chapel designed entirely by Gian Lorenzo Bernini - however, located within its outer cloister is where you’ll find its true marvel. Known as the “tempietto”, this small circular temple is considered to be the prototype for that of San Pietro basilica at the Vatican. Masterfully crafted by one of Italy's most creative architects, it showcases a mix of classical references and an elegant use of ratios.
