Doge Agostino Barbarigo commissioned the magnificent Torre dell’Orologio, otherwise known as St. Mark's Clock Tower or "the Moor's Clocktower", to face Piazza San Marco in 1493. Maurizio Codussi designed the structure and began its construction in 1496. It features intricate 15th-century engineering, with the clock depicting the time of day, the moon phase, and which zodiac sign is currently dominant. Venetian folklore even tells of how when it was revealed on February 1st 1499, it was so exquisite that Barbarigo had to blind its maker so no one else could replicate it.
