About
A sheer cliffside defense protects this medieval Italian town.
Perched atop a hillock close to the “ankle” of the Italian boot, Sant'Agata de' Goti presents a stunning view with its flat wall abruptly ending in a dramatic river gorge. Its long history can be traced back to 313 BCE, when it was founded by the Samnites. Subsequently coming under Roman and then Gothic domination, this tiny community was not given its current moniker until the 1300s after a regional nobleman. It maintains much of its medieval look with streets meandering through town, narrow enough for pedestrians but too small for modern traffic; hence preserving that inviolable old-world charm.
