About

There is only one "Egyptian" pyramid in Europe, and it is the legendary tomb of Remus.

The Roman conquest of Egypt gave rise to a fascination with the culture, and this was reflected in Rome. Items originating from Egypt, as well as replicas, appeared throughout the city. Of the two pyramids known to have been built there, only one remains – the Pyramid of Cestius. This 36 meter tall structure was constructed between 18 and 12 BC as a tomb for a wealthy individual who had embraced Egyptian influences. Not much is known about the man originally interred here; the tomb was looted long ago and its surroundings have changed drastically over time. Now situated close to an intersection teeming with traffic and a major railway station, it initially stood outside of downtown Rome amidst stately columns and two bronze statues that now reside in Musei Capitolini.
