About

Did Hercules' wrath, the devil, or volcanic activity create this cave?

Originally an island, before the Etruscans drained the lake to create new agricultural land, Monte Venere was originally an area of stunning beauty. The UNESCO’s Primeval Beech Forests of Europe transnational network of protected sites includes the forest that covers much of Monte Venere and surrounds Pozzo del Diavolo, which is located above Vico Lake in the beautiful beech forest of Monte Venere. The entrance to the cave is about five meters wide and 40 meters long, and it slopes down to a sloping floor littered with volcanic rocks that presumably collapsed from the entrance and from the ceiling. At 507 meters (1,663 feet) above sea level, Lake Vico is Italy’s highest volcanic lake and Monte Venere is among the lowest in the country.
