About
Matera's history traces back to prehistoric times, when evidence of pottery vessels from the Early Neolithic period were discovered in the caves.
Nomadic peoples were the first to settle in the Murgia region, followed by those dedicated to sheep farming who established their homes on the hill of Civita. The city's origins can be traced back to this initial settlement. Throughout its history, Matera faced various rulers including Byzantine emperors, Lombards and Saracens, until the arrival of the Normans in 1042. It was during this time that Matera's iconic rock churches were created, complete with intricate frescoes and sculptures. Alongside the historical core, a new part of the city emerged in the 13th century with elegant districts designed by renowned Italian architects.
