This is the oldest of Venice's plague quarantine stations.
It has been revealed that more than 1,500 plague victims have been buried in mass graves on Lazzaretto Vecchio, a city island that serves as a quarantine during times of plague to prevent disease. In 1348, a devastating outbreak of plague ravaged throughout Europe, killing as many as 500 people per day. The death toll was thought to be as high as 500 at times.
