About
Lago di Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee, is a stunning lake situated in the scenic Alta Pusteria/Hochpustertal region of Italy.
It boasts a turquoise-green hue and is surrounded by the impressive Seekofel massif (2,810 m) at an altitude of approximately 1,500 m above sea level. This mountain lake is a popular destination for those seeking leisure, nature enthusiasts, and hikers alike, throughout the year. With an average depth of 17 m and a lowest point of 36 m, Lake Braies offers an experience like no other. Although it is recognized as one of South Tyrol's bathing lakes, only a brave few are willing to take a dip in its cool waters. Enveloped by towering rock formations that once collapsed to create this narrow valley, Lake Braies is classified as a damming lake with no visible outflow. The water flows underground at the lowest point and resurfaces further down the valley. Legend has it that this tranquil lake was formed when savages trying to extract gold were thwarted by shepherds who opened underground springs, submerging all the riches within its depths.
