About

Davy Jones' Locker is greeted by a sunken idol.

In a distant, secluded corner of the Mediterranean lies the Cristo degli Abissi (Christ of the Abyss) statue in San Fruttuoso. This bronze likeness of Jesus Christ was crafted lovingly by Guido Galletti and installed 17 meters deep into the water in 1954, to commemorate Dario Gonzatt, the first Italian to use scuba diving gear. Paying homage to those who have lost their lives while at sea, this sculpture is a rare example of honored artistry away from densely populated areas. The Cristo degli Abissi endures as a tribute and has been standing for over half-a-century now.
