About
The church dedicated to purgatory souls is adorned with skulls and skeletons.
There are a number of skulls, skeletons, and other death-related decorations on this 18th-century baroque church, which is located just outside the iconic Sassi di Matera. Between 1725 and 1747, the Chiesa del Purgatorio (Church of Purgatory) was constructed for the purpose of praying for souls that are trapped between heaven and hell in limbo.
