Every year, 142 ceramic steps become a mosaic.
Every one of the 142 tiles of the Caltagirone staircase's 142 steps is embellished with a distinctive and vibrant design, adding to the staircase's all-year-round appeal. But for two and a half weeks each year, a mural design is painted up the entire flight of stairs, embellished with flowers, and lit by candles, making the stairs even more amazing. The stairs ascend directly to the Santa Maria del Monte church, linking the older, lower town with the newer, upper town. The steps become the center of the town during a few significant holidays because of their wide variety of designs, which range from religious to natural.
