About
At the medieval ages, a castle was constructed at Montemgano to serve as a nobleman's home and a haven during sieges.
Because of its advantageous location, the fortress had control over the Francigena, the route that connected Lucca to the Versilian plain. The actual date of the castle's construction is unknown, however historical records indicate that it has existed in the region since 1099.
Reputable archeological studies indicate that the castle was once situated atop the hill; however, today, just a few segments of the outside wall survive.
