About

Still standing tall in the middle of the Italian countryside are these destroyed monastery remains.

The Abbey of San Galgano in Italy was once a prosperous hermitage, but due to inadequate protection from roving bandits, it quickly fell into disrepair and was eventually shut down, leaving the magnificent ruins that still exist today. On the site of the old hermitage of San Galgano, the Abbey of San Galgano was first constructed in the 1200s. Catholic tradition holds that without any encouragement from Galgano, the horse brought the man to the summit of Monte Siepi. The saint took this to be a sign and sought to erect a cross on the summit of the mountain but was without any wood. He then swung his sword into the ground, the crucifix-shaped handle and hilt. As the story goes, the sword immediately fused with the rock in a miraculous transmogrification. As the story goes, the sword instantly transformed into a rock by fusing with it.
