About
An abandoned baby was dropped into a rotating door at a Renaissance hospital.
Florence in the 1400s was said to be the center of civilization. Art, science, wealth and architecture were all flourishing under the powerful rule from the Medici family. Yet despite this, Florence had an abundance of abandoned babies - scattered across fields, alleyways and even pews of the Church. This was not uncommon in Medieval and Renaissance Europe; for in such harsh conditions many children, especially girls, were discarded due to illegitimacy, war, famine, plague or poverty. Many of these unfortunate children were also born out of servitude and slavery.
