About
A lord who worshipped crows once held power in this precariously situated stronghold.
Abruzzo, a region in central Italy, has the little settlement of Roccascalegna. The village, which is supposed to have been established by the Lombards around 600, is located at the base of the impossible-to-build Roccascalegna Castle. This remarkable fortification was probably constructed to protect the Secco Valley below and is positioned on the ledge of a huge basalt rock. The picturesque location, which overlooks verdant meadows and olive groves, has a troubled background. The valley has experienced numerous invasions and pirate incursions from the Adriatic coast over the years since it was first constructed.
