About
Through 52 different tunnels, this Italian hiking trail snakes its way through the mountains.
Constructed during World War I by the Italian military, the Road of 52 Tunnels is a path enveloped in fog that guides hikers through numerous tunnels, each of which has its own unique features. It was devised as a supply line for Italian troops guarding against Austrian and Hungarian soldiers in the rugged Alpine terrain and was carved out in less than twelve months – an incredible achievement given the technology available at the time. The tunnels and route provided scenic views and also served as defensive positions during battles.
