About
Mining engineers consider this cliff-face port a masterpiece.
In the world, no other port or sea harbor is quite like Italy's Porto Flavia. Built in 1924, the innovative cliff-face port allowed workers to drop ore directly into cargo ships below. The Masua mining operations in Sardinia reached their peak in 1922, after being active since the early 1600s. In the 1920s, zinc and lead were in high demand, and modern mining methods made it possible to extract more ore.
