About

"The Salem of Europe" is the site of the last witch trials in Italy.

It was a dark time for Triora, for in 1587, it did not matter if one was a good witch or a bad witch - witches of all types were burned at the stake. To this day, the village remembers what happened and pays tribute to those who suffered. The catalyst that led to the tragedy had been a famine caused by poor weather and harvests, which resulted in panic and paranoia among the residents as they looked for someone to blame. Conversations soon turned into mass hysteria during church services as frightened parishioners pointed fingers. Soon after, 20 women were arrested by Inquisitor of Genoa and Albenga and Girolamo del Pozzo. Through torture, more names were elicited and 30 people - 13 grown women, four young girls, and a single boy - had been rounded up. In the end 18 of these broke down and confessed to being in league with Satan.
